Faulty Differential Pin Prompts FCA Recall

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling several vehicles out of concerns about their differential retaining pin.

FCA submitted a safety recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) on March 23, 2017 regarding the faulty pins. The company said they began investigating the issue on March 10, 2017, after a rear axle was returned through the warranty process.

The company is recalling thirty 2016-2017 Dodge Ram 1500 trucks over the issue.

According to the report, the differential pin’s retaining screw can come loose and contact the bearing cap, possibly allowing the pin to come out of position. This releases the differential pinion spider gears, which could lead to the differential locking up. A broken or locked up differential may result in a loss of power and possible loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of crash.

FCA said in the recall report they were not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

FCA identified the manufacturer of the components in question as ZF Axle Drives Marysville in Marysville, Michigan.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the differential retaining pin, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 7, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler’s number for this recall is T20. Concerned consumers can also visit the NHTSA’s website and enter their VIN to see if their vehicle is included in any recalls.

The manufacturer of your vehicle is legally required to fix any recalled problems for free. If the dealership refuses to fix the part or tries to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately. The Highway Safety Act of 1970, which created the NHTSA, requires car manufacturers to pay for the recall and replacement of a defective part.

If the manufacturer fails to repair, replace, repurchase, or provide the loss value of your recalled vehicle, they are violating the warranty and a lawyer may be able to help you. Lemon law attorneys help their clients by dealing directly with the manufacturer on the clients’ behalf, working to promptly resolve the issue and get their clients back on the road. Thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, attorneys can seek their fees directly from the manufacturer, meaning a client can obtain legal counsel without having to pay attorneys’ fees directly out of pocket.
