Mercedes-Benz Power Steering Units Open to Elements, Forcing Recall

A power steering issue forced Mercedes-Benz to issue a recall for 58,323 vehicles on April 21, 2017.

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) it will recall the vehicles after discovering they have an electric power steering connector that is insufficiently sealed, allowing water to enter the control unit.

If water enters a vehicle’s power steering control unit, the power steering assist may fail and increase the risk of a crash.

Vehicles included in the recall include the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E300, 2016 Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic Coupe, 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz GL350, 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz GL450, 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz GL550, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE550E, 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS63, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE300D 4Matic, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE350, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE350D, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE400, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE43, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE63, and 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE63S.

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the connector and inspect the electric power steering rack, replacing the rack as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in May 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. Concerned Mercedes-Benz owners can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website and enter their VIN to see if their vehicle is included in any recalls.

The manufacturer of your vehicle is legally required to fix any recalled problems free of charge. If the dealership refuses to fix the part or tries to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately. The Highway Safety Act of 1970, which created the NHTSA, says you cannot be charged for the recall and replacement of a defective part.

If the manufacturer fails to repair, replace, repurchase, or provide the loss value of your recalled vehicle, they are violating the warranty and a lawyer may be able to help you. Lemon law attorneys help their clients by dealing directly with the manufacturer on the clients’ behalf, working to promptly resolve the issue and get their clients back on the road. Thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, attorneys can seek their fees directly from the manufacturer, meaning a client can obtain legal counsel without having to pay attorneys’ fees directly out of pocket.
